Korean Percussion and World Music

Client: Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago, Brent Roman

Tools: Canva, iMovie

Date: January 2021

This is a 5-part educational video series looking at Korean traditional percussion instruments and how they may be similar to or different from percussion instruments from other parts of the world.

KPAC's Executive Artistic Director Byoung Sug Kim and Multi-percussionist/Educator Brent Roman definitely took the creative lead on the project. I helped outline the episodes and we filmed the entire series in Brent’s garage on our smartphones.

I then designed the inserts on Canva (the graphic slides, which have also been used as the thumbnails) and edited the whole thing together on iMovie, supplementing our footage with a virtual samulnori performance that KPAC had recorded previously and some silly cuts and effects.

While the lighting and set design leave much to be desired, I was actually quite happy with the end result, considering it was my first time editing!

The five-part series includes a video very briefly introducing samulnori, one video for each of the four samulnori instruments, and a wrap-up.
